Waller was the first musician to record jazz on the pipe organ, and part of the success of the recordings is how Waller tamed the huge instrument and gave it its own unique swing. Before discussing the recordings, there are a number of questions regarding the Victor sessions, and some of them must be worked out by educated suppositions. The building was at least 50 years old, and the existing pipe organ was in need of restoration and improvements. In , Victor hired the Estey Pipe Organ Company to redesign the instrument for recording, including several features usually found solely on theatre organs.

Employees of the Estey Company installed the organ, Opus , over the Christmas holidays, a rather unusual time but one that circumstances necessitated because major refurbishing of the sanctuary and the construction of a large rear addition to the building were running far behind schedule. One can only imagine the excitement felt by everyone on that first Sunday in January, , when the church finally reopened.
The majesty and grandeur of the new organ, with its splendid Greek-revival case, were evident as music sounded forth once again, in praise of God. The Reverend Daniel Clare proudly presided at this important celebration, marking the completion of work in the sanctuary and the spacious rear addition that we know today. Instead, a rather clumsy water-powered system supplied the necessary wind pressure. It depended on gravity, as chambers with moving partitions filled and emptied, creating the needed wind supply.
Despite their limitations and shortcomings, these water-powered wind systems for organs, once widely used, signaled something of an advance. Probably only one pumper was needed for the original Andrews organ. The advent of the electric blower in the mid-to-late s was perhaps the greatest advance in the organbuilding industry. In the early s, electricity was rather new to Hamilton, and service was not entirely dependable.
The situation of course improved with time. However, it took a few years before the church decided to replace the problematical water motor with an electric blower, located in a closet-like space in the kitchen.

New England was a bustling hub of manufacturing in the 19th century. The greater Keene and Brattleboro areas were home to a striking variety of manufactured products. While growing food was a necessity for survival, the local geography was more suited to growing factories. Manufacturers took advantage of the rivers for water and steam power, and machinery moved production of goods from the home to factories. Some of the manufactured goods included shoes, pottery, glassware and textiles, all geared toward the utilitarian needs of a growing population.
However, industrialization also created the means and appetite for more cultural pursuits. Machines lowered the cost of manufacturing musical instruments, and music-making grew in popularity. In , Samuel and Joseph Jones arrived in Brattleboro and began producing hand-crafted melodeons, often referred to as reed organs, or American organs.
These instruments produced their familiar tones by using foot-operated bellows to suction air over reeds. In , Jacob Estey invested in the modestly successful business.
