Last Saturday night, I took a little extra time with my makeup and my hair. I spent a longer than normal amount of time finding a dress that flattered my figure in all the right places along with the perfect heels to accent the outfit. I wanted to look my best because I was going on a date…with myself. I started this tradition many years ago when I was living the single life. For most of my twenties I was single more than I was in a relationship and because of that, I got to be very good at being alone. So from time to time, I started eating at nice restaurants, going to concerts, and even traveling alone.

For lots of people, the best way to keep a relationship thriving is “never stop dating.” Redditor ckernan2 came up with a great rule to keep him in.
But while staying in isn’t always bad, there are good reasons to run a comb through our hair and put on our best threads and not just because we have new outfits we want to try out. New research shows that keeping up a “date night” can be incredibly powerful for maintaining a romance long-term. It comes down to growing with each other through new experiences. Scientists aimed to measure self-expansion, or “the integration of the qualities and characteristics of the partner into oneself,” according to the abstract.
Self-expansion creates a sense of “group identity,” a team-of-two dynamic between a couple. The participants rated statements about their relationship like, “Your relationship with your partner is the source of new experiences,” and, “Being with your partner expands your sense of who you are. The finding? Couples who had been together longer generally had lower group identity, since, the study says, we stop trying new things the longer we date.
But there were exceptions: Those couples who kept squeezing in new experiences reported more attraction and sensual love than those who felt like their partners didn’t help them grow anymore. A study published in Personal Relationships found that spending time on shared activities helped sustain and improve relationships, but only when couples went on mutually satisfying dates as opposed to one person being dragged to see Birdman when all they want to do is hit two-for-one taco night.
Even just one novel seven-minute experience can boost overall relationship quality, another study found.

For many, dating is the part of a relationship that takes you into marriage. In the early days, it is a way of spending time with your new love interest, getting to know them, wooing them. However, these are all things that can begin to seem less important the longer you are married. When the regular routine sets in and romance starts to take a back seat to things such as work, bills, family life, and chores. Yet, romance and dating should not merely be viewed as the thing that brought you together.
Instead, they should be a permanent fixture of you and your partner’s lives, regardless of how long you have been together. It’s by choice. After all, marriage is not a destination; it’s a journey, and neglecting the details can have a significant negative impact. One of these little details is spending quality time with each other.
Dating can fall by the wayside in marriage because you already live together. Seeing the importance of allocating specific time to be with one another can be difficult when you are already spending so much time together. However, continual and purposeful dating is not just helpful but essential to the maintenance of a healthy and happy on-going relationship.
According to Dr. Gottman’s Sound Relationship House theory , relationships are most easily sustained when partners have a clear understanding of each other’s inner worlds — their hopes, dreams, interests, and feelings.

Hey Friends! After receiving a bit of inspiration from our neighborhood friends we sat down and really brainstormed how we could be helpers on this topic. Well, after sitting back and looking it over we came to the realization that dating is different for everyone.
The game allowed us to retrace our steps and analyze why we fell in love in the first place. In less than an hour playing the game, I learned things about my husband that I hadn’t learned in 45 yrs. Before you were married, most likely, both you and your spouse-to-be would strive to meet each others needs. Those fulfilled needs are probably what led you to the alter in the first place.
Frequently, when a couple marries, the resources once spent in pursuit of the spouse-to-be are now allocated elsewhere, and the relationship wanes. The time and energy that once fed the relationship is now given to other things— necessary things, good things: education, career, a home, and children. In the process however, the needs of the spouse can easily begin to lose priority. If this course persists however, and time spent together continues to remain infrequent, common interests will begin to fade causing disappointment, discouragement and creating emotional distance for the once happy couple.
At this point the important becomes critical. An essential part of a successful marriage is a date night.
